Psalm 19

1  The heavens are telling the glory of God ♦︎
and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.
2  One day pours out its song to another ♦︎
and one night unfolds knowledge to another.
3  They have neither speech nor language ♦︎
and their voices are not heard,
4  Yet their sound has gone out into all lands ♦︎
and their words to the ends of the world.
5  In them has he set a tabernacle for the sun, ♦︎
that comes forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber
and rejoices as a champion to run his course.
6  It goes forth from the end of the heavens
and runs to the very end again, ♦︎
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
7  The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; ♦︎
the testimony of the Lord is sure
and gives wisdom to the simple.
8  The statutes of the Lord are right and rejoice the heart; ♦︎
the commandment of the Lord is pure
and gives light to the eyes.
9  The fear of the Lord is clean and endures for ever; ♦︎
the judgements of the Lord are true
      and righteous altogether.
10  More to be desired are they than gold,
more than much fine gold, ♦︎
   sweeter also than honey,
      dripping from the honeycomb.
11  By them also is your servant taught ♦︎
and in keeping them there is great reward.
12  Who can tell how often they offend? ♦︎
O cleanse me from my secret faults!
13  Keep your servant also from presumptuous sins
lest they get dominion over me; ♦︎
   so shall I be undefiled,
      and innocent of great offence.
14  Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be acceptable in your sight, ♦︎
O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.

Exodus 19: 1-9a

The Israelites Reach Mount Sinai

19At the third new moon after the Israelites had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day, they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2They had journeyed from Rephidim, entered the wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness; Israel camped there in front of the mountain. 3Then Moses went up to God; the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, ‘Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the Israelites: 4You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5Now therefore, if you obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples. Indeed, the whole earth is mine, 6but you shall be for me a priestly kingdom and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the Israelites.’

So Moses came, summoned the elders of the people, and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him. 8The people all answered as one: ‘Everything that the Lord has spoken we will do.’ Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord. 9Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, in order that the people may hear when I speak with you and so trust you ever after.’

The People Consecrated

1 Peter 2: 4-10

Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5like living stones, let yourselves be built* into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in scripture:
‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone,
   a cornerstone chosen and precious;
and whoever believes in him* will not be put to shame.’
7To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe,
‘The stone that the builders rejected
has become the very head of the corner’,
8and
‘A stone that makes them stumble,
and a rock that makes them fall.’
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people,* in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
10 Once you were not a people,
   but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
but now you have received mercy.
